Lahore, the second-largest city of Pakistan has ranked 230th on the WCI (World Crime Index) for January 2020. This is a huge improvement from its previous ranking which is 201st on the WCI mid-2019 report. According to the statistics released by Safety and Crime Ranking Portal, Numbeo, the crime index for Lahore has dropped from 38.43 to 37.43 and the safety index has been increased from 61.75 to 62.57.
As per the report, Lahore is considered safer than many other big cities such as San Francisco, DC, Las Vegas, Birmingham, Manchester, London, Washington, Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Istanbul, and Rome, among several others.
The city of Caracas in Venezuela has been considered the most dangerous city with the crime index of 85.26, whereas, Abu Dhabi was declared the safest city in the world with a crime index of 10.6.
Lahore has been through a praiseworthy improvement with the flow of time. In 2014, Lahore ranked 74th on the spot. In 2015, it improved to 96th rank. In 2016, it jumped to 82nd rank. In 2017, it ranked 114th on the index. In 2018, Lahore was graded 173rd. In 2019, the ranking got improved to 174th position and by mid-2019, it ranked in 201st position. Today Lahore has successfully curbed crime rates and ranks 230th position on the scale.
Lahore is present at this position due to the increase in security and the preventive measures taken by the authorities over the past couple of years resulting in reduced crime rates which made Lahore,statistically, one of the safest cities that offer a quality lifestyle to its citizens.
The government played a major role by establishing PSCA (Punjab Safest Cities Authority) under the Punjab cities ordinance 2015. This authority was set up to cater to security-related issues and solve those issues with the use of technology and strong minds to enhance public safety in the region. The major functions of the self-governing body included maintenance, development, the flow of command, communication, and control.
The Law enforcement agencies also played a vital role in crime prevention from the city.Punjab Police Integrated Command Control and Communication Centre (PPlC3) was launched in October 2016. It made an investment of $120,000,000. The main aim of PPlC3 was to enhance the performance of law enforcement agencies with the use of modern technology and effective communication center. PPlC3 basically gathers, analyzes and circulates data among the executive of traffic management, government offices and intelligence agencies among other private and public authorities.
8000 cameras installed in Lahore city will further aid the counter-terrorism and counter crime efforts. 333 police communication officers are employed at this center, 25% of whom are women. All the forces under Punjab Police are integrated. They are monitored and the feedback is sought. They are equipped with LT handsets and the improved version of 4G technology is used i.e., 4G-LTEA. These efforts are made to serve the common man of this nation.
The main aim is to reduce traffic violations, improve incident tracking and achieve public safety to make Lahore one of the safest and peaceful cities in Pakistan. The Intelligent Traffic Management System in Lahore was collaborated with PSCA, under the initiative of traffic signals with automated timers were installed in different spots across the city along with Automatic Number-Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, which automatically recognizes and fine traffic violators in the region. The response time for the forces is as little as 9-11 minutes. The response time for dolphin police is 7-9 minutes. They have also introduced Women Protecting App.
The PSCA is planning to cover six more countries including Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Multan, Bahawalpur, and Gujranwala. The new and improved Punjab police are equipped and ready to keep the city safe.
