Hindutva and the Kashmir Crisis
Since the revoking of Kashmir’s autonomy, the Muslim Majority Kashmir state has been in a state of non-existence. The internet was shut down, landlines were cut off and cellular networks were disabled. The citizens are under a curfew and eight million people have been cut off from the world. Thousands of troops were deployed and the region came under a lockdown. The Kashmiris are surrounded by chaos and silenced through violence.
The developing worldwide phenomena of Islamophobia and the BJP’s Hindutva-driven ideology are two of a kind. Hindutva speaks to a character established in the predominance of the Hindus, and confines and treats as mediocre all others, especially Muslims. By posing Muslims as an element that has traditionally represented a danger to the characteristic province of “Hinduness” in the subcontinent, Hindutva views India as an inalienably Hindu country. Such an account structures the reason for an exclusionary public story that centers exclusively around the privileges of Hindus. The tenet of Hindutva has likewise given an occasion to the BJP authority to utilize the Kashmir emergency to extend a regional danger to India’s power from the Muslim personality — serving the patriot plan of segregating Muslims in India.
The ascent of Islamophobia in India is related to the developing impact of the RSS and the BJP — both motivated by Hindutva ideology. With Indian Prime Minister Modi a day to day existence individual from the RSS, the BJP-drove Indian government is utilizing state structures against Muslims amid the rising tide of Islamophobia to increase political and philosophical authenticity. By benefiting from the anti-Muslim slants in India, the Modi-drove BJP won an avalanche triumph in 2019 and has strengthened Hindu nationalist components in India to empower and execute assaults against strict minorities, explicitly Kashmiri Muslims.
The Indian state has aggressive policies towards Kashmir based on their extreme Hindutva ideology since BJP came under the rule. It is believed by many that Modi’s BJP is trying to change the ethnic composition of Kashmir to disrupt the Muslim majority by letting more Hindus in the region. Modi’s government has been known to stoke tensions between Muslims and Hindus, through its political rule which focuses on “Hindutva.” Hindutva reframes Hinduism as an identity instead of religion.
Modi has been practicing anti-Islamic rhetoric in various ways. Such as accusing Muslim men of seducing Hindu women to change the demographics of India. As well as falsely accusing Muslims of eating beef from the sacred Hindu cow. These tactics and much more have been used to strengthen the notion of Hindutva and to isolate the Muslims in India. And no doubt, Kashmir is one of their biggest targets.
The constitution of India clearly states that India is a secular state, but the current scenario of BJP ventures is questioning the clauses of its constitution. India has been carrying out genocide of Muslims in Kashmir to turn Muslims into a minority in the region. To increase the Hindu influence in the region, cross ethnocultural marriages are highly supported and demanded. BJP has set up an environment where hate speech directed at Muslims is encouraged in the name of Hindu Nationalism. It is stated that India is a Hindu Nation, and Muslims are just an entity that is jeopardizing the Hindu identity. Therefore, to strip away the identity of Muslims has become the nationalist agenda of BJP. According to the vision of Hindutva, Kashmir is an essential part of India, by considering the historical Indus Valley as part of Hindu India. Whereas, the Pundit caste in Kashmir claimed to have a pre-Muslim historical background and pre-independence right.
With the rising influence of Hindu nationalism in India, the future of Kashmiris who are living in fear is even more miserable. With Kashmiris youngsters are being blinded with pellets, women being sexually abused, Kashmiris being arrested, the future of Kashmir is despairing.
