Srinagar
A complete shutdown has been observed in Indian occupied Kashmir as a result of New Delhi’s ban imposed on the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front. Media reported on Sunday.
New Delhi imposed the ban yesterday in on the
pro-independence group as a part of a crackdown it calls “separatist
organizations” in a statement by the capital deemed the JKLF as “unlawful
association” as it was trying to curb the activities of “secessionist
organizations” posing a threat to the country’s unity and integrity.
The reaction by the Indian authorities is only an extension
of the measures undertaken as a result of the Palwama attack which left 40 para
military personnel dead earlier this month. In a counter offensive the Indian
authorities resorted to extrajudicial arrests of over a thousand Kashmiri
civilians
A call for the strike has been given by the joint resistance
leadership. The leadership compromising of Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq
and Muhammad Yasin Malik.
All shops and business establishments have been closed down
in the capital of Srinagar and many other small cities in the valley. The
traffic is also nonexistent.
Indian police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed
at checkpoints to ensure any potential protests can be foiled.
In a statement from the JRL stated “The order to ban
Jamaat-i-Islami and JKLF is nothing but an act of political vengeance and an
oppressive tactic to suppress the just movement of people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Indian government’s decision to ban the organizations peacefully striving
for the resolution of Kashmir dispute, will not cow down the people,”.
Resistance groups have been fighting for Kashmir’s right to
self-determination for almost 30 years with thousands dead most of them being
civilians.
